Jiu-Jitsu Program
LOCKPORT STUDENTS WIN NATIONAL USA JU JITSU CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saturday, October 14 and Sunday, October 15, USA Self Defense Centers competed in the USA Jiu Jitsu National Championships in Akron, Ohio.
Jiu Jitsu competition is broken down into two parts. One is called “duo” and is a team series of self defense techniques judged on reality and effectiveness. It includes boys, girls and mixed girl and boy teams. The second part is “ kumite” fighting with safety gear and is judged on three parts of the match: kicking and punching, throws, and grappling. In the youth duo team competition Thomas Furlong and Peter Heim won the Gold Medal for 1st Place boys advanced division, and Zack Cox and Jake Cox, won the Gold Medal for 1st place in boys intermediate division. Amanda Joyce and Hillary Chiarella won the Gold Medal for 1st Place girls advanced division. In the mixed competition intermediate level Thomas Furlong and Amanda Joyce won the Gold Medal for 1st Place and in the mixed competition advanced division Peter Heim and Hillary Chiarella won the Gold Medal for 1st Place. In the advanced Adult Duo Joshua Thomas and Jerad Forsyth won the Silver Medal for 2nd Place. In the youth weapons division Peter Heim won the Gold Medal for 1st Place performing his nunchuk kata and Thomas Furlong won the Silver Medal for 2nd Place performing his kama kata. In the adult kumite Pat McJury won the Silver medal for 2nd place.
Each of these students who have won a Gold Medal are National Champions and eligible to represent the USA at International Competition including Pan American Games and World Games. We are very proud of their performance and appreciate the recognition that they bring to Lockport, New York. USA Self Defense Centers, 6007 Brockton Drive, Lockport, offers three programs of Martial Arts: Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Karate. Our students compete in Judo tournaments, Karate tournaments, and Jiu Jitsu tournaments, they are well rounded martial artists.
